The powers are influenced by parents, they are not always carried onto the next generation but often have impact. So for example if parents are a fire element controller and an air element controller the biggest chances are their child will have either fire, air or electricity to control. Of course, the persons personality has impact on the power as well as the surroundings.

History / how did you end up in this school:
The ones that come from families in which magic is a usual thing and it's known that their children would be surrounded by magic one day - have the official Canticum site on which they apply and get admitted since Canticum isn't the only magical school in Europe.
The ones who haven't been in contact with magic and are not aware their parents are sorcerers are tracked down by the Canticum staff ( professors and principal ) and visited in private where the situation is cleared to them. They decide whether they want their custodians to know about it or not - usually it's preferred to keep it a secret since people do not take the news of magic existence that easily.
